How to Set Up Meta Ads in 2026 (Business Manager, Pixel & First Campaign)
The exact order of setup steps that keeps you from getting your ad account disabled on day one — and gets Meta actually tracking your sales.
Step 1 — Create your Meta Business Manager
Go to business.facebook.com and click "Create Account." Use your legal business name, your real name, and a business email. Do NOT set this up under your personal Facebook profile — you'll regret it the first time Meta flags something.
Step 2 — Add an ad account (correctly)
In Business Settings → Accounts → Ad Accounts, create a new ad account. Set the time zone and currency to what you actually operate in — Meta will not let you change these later without creating a brand new account and losing your history.
Step 3 — Connect your Facebook Page and Instagram
Under Business Settings → Accounts, add your Facebook Page and your Instagram professional account. If your Instagram is still Personal, switch it to Business inside the Instagram app first.
Step 4 — Install the Meta Pixel
Open Events Manager, click "Connect Data Sources → Web," and create a pixel. Install it on every page of your site — most site builders (Shopify, Squarespace, WordPress) have a plug-in that does this in one click. Verify it's firing using the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension.
Step 5 — Set up the Conversions API (CAPI)
Browser-only tracking is broken since iOS 14. CAPI sends events server-side and recovers 20–40% of missing conversions. Most modern platforms have a native CAPI integration — turn it on. If not, use a gateway like Stape or Google Tag Manager server-side container.
Step 6 — Verify your domain
In Business Settings → Brand Safety → Domains, add your domain and verify it via meta tag, HTML file, or DNS TXT record. Without this, you can't rank conversion events for iOS users. This step is skipped in 80% of failed accounts.
Step 7 — Rank your 8 conversion events
Meta only tracks 8 events per verified domain for iOS. Rank them from most to least valuable — usually: Purchase, Initiate Checkout, Add to Cart, Lead, Complete Registration, View Content, etc.
Step 8 — Launch your first campaign
- Objective: Sales or Leads (never Traffic if you want to sell).
- Budget: $30–$50/day at the campaign level (Advantage+ CBO).
- Audience: Advantage+ Audience — broad. Country + age range.
- Placements: Advantage+ Placements (let Meta distribute).
- Creatives: 3 ads — a Reel, a static, a UGC-style testimonial.
- Landing page: Fast, mobile-first, single call to action.
The 5 setup mistakes that get accounts banned
- Running ads from a personal profile instead of Business Manager.
- Using a virtual card / prepaid Visa (Meta flags these instantly).
- Trying to run ads before verifying your business identity.
- Cloaking landing pages or using before/after weight-loss creative.
- Sharing your ad account login with 5 different freelancers instead of using Business Manager roles.
Once your setup is clean, the game becomes creative + offer + funnel. See our beginner's guide to running Facebook ads and the 2026 cost benchmarks.
